Title Research: Halloween (2018)

From ‘Art Of The Title’ https://www.artofthetitle.com/

1 ~ How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film? Which ones?

A total of 9 titles are displayed during the opening sequence:

  • “Halloween” (the title of the movie)

  • “Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie”

  • “Judy Greer as Karen”

  • “Virginia Gardner as Vicky”

  • “Dylan Arnold as Cameron” and “Rhian Rees as Dana”

  • “Music by John Carpenter; Cody Carpenter; Daniel Davies”

  • “Director of Photography Micheal Simmonds”

  • “Executive Producers John Carpenter; Jamie Lee Curtis”

  • “Based on Characters created by John Carpenter and Debra Hill”

2 ~ What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?

The opening sequences shows sequences of a pumpkin rotting in reverse or coming “back to life” and becoming fresh again. These scenes directly relate to the title of the movie “Halloween”.

3 ~ How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset

The film is a horror movie as the movie title implies. The use of a rotting pumpkin coming back to life has a creepy and spooky connotation. I also thought the fact the pumpkin was shown rotten in the beginning foreshadowing rebirth that the viewer would be seeing in the movie. The title being simple also engages the viewers to keep watching to see the theme and plot of the film.
